Landmines in Afghanistan
The landmine has often been described as the "perfect soldier" because it does not need to be fed or clothed and it is always ready to perform its grizzly task. The problem is that it kills indiscriminately during conflicts and long after.
"A landmine cannot distinguish between the footfall of a soldier or the sandal of a child".
Some landmines are visible, but most are buried just below the surface of the soil. There are hundreds of different types of landmines - they cost as little as $3 each to purchase and up to $1,000 to remove.
